CUT IT OUT

no_under_shirt
Alright slackers it’s time to shape up and I’m not talking about your body. The gym is no longer the fashion neutral sanctuary it once was and it’s high time your workout clothes looked as fit as you. Sure, with gas prices on the up and up you’re not exactly looking to shed money like pounds on a treadmill but worry not. There is an easy way to turn some of your old shirts into some new workout gear. With a few simple steps you can have yourself a brand new(ish) deep cut muscle shirt.

There is an easy way to turn some of your old shirts into some new workout gear. With a few simple steps you can have yourself a brand new(ish) deep cut muscle shirt.

STEP ONE

Find a t-shirt that is slightly big on you. You don’t want to pick anything too tight. I would also stick to regular crew neck or ringer neck. V-necks just don’t look good with this look.

STEP TWO

You are going to need to make four notch marks to mark where you are going to start and finish your cut. The top notch marks will ultimately determine how much coverage the shirt provides. Cutting closer to the the neck will reduce the coverage. I would suggest starting the cut about 1.5" to 2”away from the neck, which should be measured after the rib collar (or green collar in the picture.) The bottom notch will determine how deep the cut will go.The lower the cut the looser the shirt will fit.

STEP THREE

Now you are going to make the actual cut from the top notch down. To get the best shape the cut should look like a “J.” This means the first 2/3 should be pretty straight and the the final 1/3 should curve out to meet your bottom notch. Don’t worry if the cut isn’t perfectly straight . As long as you stick to the basic shape you should be fine.

HOW TO WEAR
The great thing about this shirt (besides the fact it doesn’t cost you anything to make) is that there are numerous ways to wear it. Here are a few suggestions.

OPTION ONE - AS IS

This is great look for showing off all your hard work at the gym. The looseness of the shirt also works to keep you cool and comfortable during intense cardio workouts.

OPTION TWO - WITH AN UNDERSHIRT
under-shirt
Not looking to show off as much? Then simply layer a tank top underneath. This gives you a nice layered look without being too heavy. The tank top also works to absorb sweat before it hits your outer layer which will leave you looking dryer longer. For a real fashion forward twist you can wear a contrast colored tank top to really make the look pop.
